Crystallographers play with computers

By | October 13, 2011

The Mieres Crystallographic Computing School took place immediately before the IUCr in a town in north Spain called Oviedo. The school was a great success with delegates coming from all over the world from as far away advanced Japan. The school proved to be a great forum to exchange ideas within a specialist area of crystallography. The topic of the lectures varied from the extremely technical regarding direct methods to GUI design principles. One constant theme was how to develop software using the software development tools available, such as version control.

The lectures were punctuated with tutorials. These ranged from 3 hour long coding sessions with cctbx to topical discussions about the advantages of choosing your data structure correctly. The school was a great success and since there was a pool, I can only conclude that this was a health spa for geeks. I look forward to Ottawa in 2014.
